Zone 9 - What to Plant in January

Zone 9 still has time to get some vegetables planted and grown before that spring heat kicks in. All the cool seasons vegetables like lettuce and spinach should be direct sowed into your garden. Tomatoes and peppers should be transplanted into the garden in January as well. Try some of the vegetables below.

The Green Sprouting Calabrese produces large dark green heads bursting with flavor. This broccoli with is a favorite, that now is available as organic seed! Good in short season areas with cool nights. It will produce many lateral or side shoots over a long season. It is slow bolting with a flavor that can't be beat.

The Snow Crown cauliflower is a delicious, mild and sweet hybrid. This cauliflower's head will get to 7-8 inches across and 1-2 pounds. The Snow Crown is extra early and adaptable and can be harvested in summer or fall. Be careful not to under-fertilize or water, stress can cause a purplish discoloration on the undersides of the head.

The Bloomsdale spinach is such an attractive, tasty, and a popular garden standard spinach. Bloomsdale spinach is an old favorite amongst gardeners and is now available in organic seeds! Lakeside smooth leaf spinach with dark green leaves. It has a round to oval leaf shape with an upright plant habit that makes it easy to harvest. It is a very versatile variety it can be used for baby leaf, bunch or clip.

The Purple Plum is an amazing purple skinned radish with a crisp, mild and sweet white flesh! This unique radish is different from the "typical" radish coloring. The Aspabroc Baby gets its name from having asparagus stems and raab heads! Aspabroc Baby Broccoli a deliciously sweet broccolini with a peppery taste. Considered a baby broccoli that was developed by Sakata in Japan. Once cooked the flavor is dulled a bit. The entire plant is edible either raw, sauted, steamed or fried. The Sunset is a beautiful deep red looseleaf lettuce that is slow to bolt. The very attractive crinkled leaves make it a favorite in any salad or dish.
