Zone 4 - What to Plant in September

Zone 4 growers typically don't have too many options to plant in September. Zone 4 first frost usually occurs in late September to early October. That being said, there's still some items you can still plant. It's the perfect time to plant garlic so you get a fast start next spring. Also there are several cover crops that can be planted now to help bring nutrients back to the garden this fall and early spring. Below is a list of items that can be planted in zone 4 in September.

The Win Win Choi Pak Choi is definitely a winner! This Bok Choy (Pak Choi) variety is has the perfect vase shape. Win Win Choi has large bulky uniform white-stems that are 10-12" tall and very tasty. This Bok Choy variety's green leaves are slightly smaller than the Joi Choi variety.

A slow growing arugula with great tasting peppery leaves! This variety produces 4" deeply cut leaves that have a slightly sharp pepper flavor. The Sylvetta is compact, heat and cold tolerant. If you are looking to spice up your salads and meals, then this is for you!

Mei Qing Choi cabbage is a Shanghai pak choi type with good heat and cold tolerance and bolting resistance. In the U.S., this variety is harvested as baby pak choi. It is smaller than Joi Choi, weighing about a quarter of a pound. This pak choi has an excellent flavor and is extra tender.

Li Ren Choi cabbage is good looking mini pak choi with light green stems and slightly darker green leaves. This variety develops a pak choi shape at a very early stage. It can even be planted in trays and harvested at transplanting time. It is one of the smaller mini pak choies on the market. Excellent production for pak choi hearts.

Red Choi is a beautiful Pak Choi cabbage that has an excellent flavor cooked into meals! This variety is green with maroon veins that changes into a deep red color. The Red Choi has a compact growing habit.

The Red Giant is a large mustard with an excellent, pungent flavor. This variety is a large purple-red leaf type. The Red Giant is great used as an ornamental or salad garnish. This variety's flavor has a slight hint of wasabi and grey poupon.

Tendergreen is a great flavored mustard green that blends well with spinach. This variety maintains a deep green color when hot and with dry conditions. This mustard is a fast maturing green with a great flavor. Tendergreen is easy to grow and rich in vitamins and minerals.

The Old Fashioned Mustard Green is a real Southern treat! This green is a favorite that can be eaten fresh or cooked, but is best enjoyed either steamed or sautéed in our opinion! The Old Fashioned Mustard is easy to grow and care for, making it a great addition to any garden.

Frizzy Lizzy Mustard produces several unique, ruffled cherry purple leaves that have serrated lobes. This green adds a spicy flavor and spunk to many salad mixes.

The Lacinato is an old heirloom kale that has very large tender leaves! Lacinato, aka Dinosaur kale, Black Magic or Toscano, is one of our most popular varieties of kale. This variety is popular for fresh markets or in the home garden. This kale variety is nicknamed dinosaur kale for its bumpy and scaly leaf the resembles the skin of a dinosaur. Lacinato's leaves are large, dark blue-green, and very flavorful and are most tender if picked young when they are less than 12" long. Lacinato produces high yields and can be harvested continually from the outside leaves or all at once.

Majestic garlic is a hardneck porcelain variety that is discovered by Beaver Pond Estates. This variety is a porcelain garlic so it does best in colder climates and develops large bulbs with a mild flavor. This garlic will mature later in the season and has excellent storage life.

Ajo Rojo garlic has a delicious mild and creamy flavor. This variety comes from Spain and is very similar to the Creole Red but is a beautiful and distinctive garlic. The Ajo Rojo is mild and creamy when baked, but watch out if consuming raw - the heat comes on slowly and builds to intense!

The Nootka Rose garlic is certified, and has a strong and aggressive flavor great for cooking. The Nootka Rose garlic was created on a farm in Washington State. The cloves have a dark coloration that are typically brown with red streaks. The Nootka Rose's bulbs tend to yield anywhere from 15-24 cloves each. This variety is a very long storing silverskin garlic. Approximately 12-15 garlic bulbs per pound. Approximately 15-24 cloves per bulb.

Spanish Roja garlic is a certified, early season garlic harvest! This variety is a gourmet best-selling garlic for home gardens with an excellent classic rich flavor! Each bulb has about 8-12 cloves. German Giant is just like its name says, a very large garlic with an excellent flavor! This garlic variety is a large garlic that has become popular for its strong, spicy flavor. Many believe German Giant to be one of the best tasting garlics available! This garlic is off-white often with deep purple streaks. Approximately 6 garlic bulbs per pound. Approximately 6-8 cloves per bulb.

The Persian Star is a hardneck purple stripe type garlic. The outer skin can grow pure white with inner wrappers that are streaked purple. The red-tipped cloves with marbled streaks on whitish or yellow-brown background. The Persian Star is a very pleasant flavor with a mild spicy zing that is a great addition to any dish!
