Celosia is an annual flower that attracts beneficial insects, is deer resistant and blooms throughout the summer and into the fall. Celosia is often used as a bedding plant, which means it should be planted in groups where they can grow together and their colors can be highlighted because they are so vibrant.

Before Planting: Sow the seeds indoors six weeks before the last frost date. Also, amend soil with compost prior to transplanting.

Planting: Celosia grows best in sandy or loamy soil or when planted in raised beds so drainage is better. Utilize stakes or plant Celosia together to prevent wind damage.

Watering: Keep the soil moist, but not wet.

Fertilizer: Fertilize Celosia monthly with a complete organic plant food to continue encouraging flowers to form.

Days to Maturity: Celosia plants won’t flower until three months after the seeds germinate but will bloom all summer long.

Harvesting: The shorter varieties do not make great bouquets, but it is possible to plant Celosia in a pot to grow outdoors all summer long, and then when poor weather begins to arrive, bring the pots indoors. This is so that the plants may last an extra few weeks than if they were only outside.

Tips: Celosia make good companion plants for marigold, zinnia and amaranth.
