Saw-tooth Sunflower (Helianthus grosseserratus) is a distinctive North American native plant. Tall reddish-purple stems and sharply toothed leaves support clusters of yellow blooms that feed insects and seed-eating birds. It matures at approximately 96 inches tall and flowers from mid to late summer through early to mid fall. Plant it in full sun to partial shade, in dry-medium through medium-wet conditions, with loamy soil or clay soil. Space plants 36–48 inches apart for healthy growth and airflow.

Downy mildew, rust, Sclerotinia stalk or head rot, Verticillium wilt, and Phomopsis stem canker affect sunflowers. Choose resistant hybrids, rotate away from susceptible broadleaf crops, and avoid dense stands. Remove volunteer sunflowers and do not save seed from moldy heads or plants with stalk decay.
Sunflower moths, beetles, cutworms, aphids, birds, and squirrels may damage plants or seed heads. Scout buds and leaves, handpick insects, and protect ripening heads with breathable barriers.
