Honeylocust
Fine, feathery leaves give honeylocust a light, dappled shade that lets lawns and gardens grow beneath it. In autumn the tiny leaflets turn golden yellow and break down easily after they fall. Drought, road salt, and compacted urban soils are all within its tolerance. It is widely planted as a street tree, windbreak, and erosion control planting. Honeylocust seed has a hard coat, so pour hot water over it or nick the coat before sowing to let moisture in.
