Redbud

Before the leaves appear, eastern redbud covers its bare branches in clusters of bright pink to magenta blooms. Heart-shaped leaves follow and turn soft yellow in fall. Its small stature fits modest yards, woodland edges, and street plantings. Bees emerging in early spring depend on the nectar and pollen. Redbud seed has both a hard coat and an inner dormancy, so it needs nicking or a hot water soak followed by a cold, moist period.
