Silverbell
Dangling clusters of white, bell-shaped flowers give Carolina silverbell its charm in spring. Unusual four-winged pods follow, adding interest through summer and fall. It thrives in partial shade and moist, acidic, well-drained soil, ideal for woodland edges and naturalistic plantings. Bees visit the flowers, and the tree's modest size fits smaller yards. Those winged fruits hold seed with a complex double dormancy, so a warm period then a cold one is needed, and sprouts may not appear for more than a year.
