Shrubs
Between the canopy and the flower bed, shrubs and landscape perennials give a garden its structure, color, and seasonal rhythm. Azalea, rhododendron, lilac, and hydrangea bring spring and summer bloom, while holly, bayberry, and elderberry form hardworking hedges. Bold perennials such as lupine, garden peony, red hot poker, and yucca add height and drama to borders. Many of these plants move from spring flowers to summer fruit and fall color, and berry-bearing species feed songbirds and pollinators. Sowing seed is an affordable way to fill entire hedgerows, borders, and wildlife plantings.
