Crabapple

Each spring, Siberian crabapple covers itself in fragrant white blossoms that bring bees and other pollinators flocking. Small, colorful fruits often hang on into winter, feeding birds when food is scarce. Its extreme cold hardiness makes it valuable in windbreaks as well as a charming specimen tree. Orchardists also rely on it as a tough rootstock for grafting apples. Because the seedlings carry that remarkable cold tolerance, sowing seed gives northern growers a sturdy base for grafting or for windbreak rows.
