Fir

Soft, fragrant needles and a symmetrical pyramidal shape define Fraser and Nordmann fir, two of the most prized Christmas trees. Full branching and excellent needle retention after cutting make them the gold standard for tree farms. In the landscape they become striking specimens and windbreaks, especially in cool climates with good moisture. Thick, tiered boughs give birds a refuge from wind and snow. Fir seedlings prefer cool conditions as they establish, so sowing in early spring and keeping young trees out of harsh heat gives them the best start.
