Oak
Strength, stature, and rich fall color make northern red oak an iconic tree for large landscapes. Its broad crown provides generous shade for lawns, parks, and streets. Few trees do more for wildlife, since oaks support hundreds of insect species and the acorns feed turkeys, jays, deer, and squirrels. Each acorn is a large seed that needs a winter chill before it sprouts, and red oak acorns should not be allowed to dry out before sowing. An acorn planted today is a gift to people and wildlife for generations.
