Red Hot Poker

Fiery torch-like spikes of red, orange, and yellow rise above grassy foliage on red hot poker, a bold perennial for sunny beds. The dramatic blooms add height to borders, rock gardens, and cottage plantings, and they make striking cut flowers. Hummingbirds and bees visit the nectar-rich flowers through summer. Give the clumps a sunny, well-drained spot and they will shrug off summer heat and dry weather. Started from seed indoors or out, plants typically form clumps the first year and send up their first torches in the second season.
