Pine

Ponderosa, bristlecone, Scots, and longleaf pines show how much variety one genus can hold, from towering native timber trees to slow, gnarled species full of character. A bonsai mix rounds out the collection for growers who love classic miniature trees. Pines are widely planted for windbreaks, reforestation, erosion control, and wildlife habitat, and many tolerate drought, cold, wind, or coastal conditions. Birds and other wildlife eat the seeds and shelter in the dense branches. Some species sprout readily without help while others do better after a short chill, and longleaf seedlings even spend their first years as a grassy tuft before shooting upward.
