Key Attributes
About Longleaf, Pine Seed
Starting life in a curious grass stage, looking like a tuft of grass while it builds deep roots, Longleaf Pine then shoots upward. This iconic Southern native, Pinus palustris, is known for its extra-long needles, which can reach a foot or more, and its tall, open crown. It is long-lived, wind-firm and highly resistant to fire, making it ideal for restoration, reforestation and large landscapes across the Southeast.

Pests & Diseases
Brown-spot needle blight is the main disease during the grass stage; prescribed fire or good spacing helps control it. Pitch canker and root rot can affect stressed trees. Good drainage prevents most issues.
Pine tip moth, bark beetles and pales weevil may attack young or stressed trees. Feral hogs can uproot grass-stage seedlings. Healthy, well-sited trees resist most pests.

Its Role in the Native Ecosystem
Longleaf Pine is the foundation of the fire-maintained longleaf savanna, one of the most species-rich ecosystems in North America. Old trees provide nesting cavities for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, and the open understory supports gopher tortoises, bobwhite quail and hundreds of wildflowers. Its large, nutritious seeds feed squirrels, turkeys and songbirds.
Longleaf Pine Native Range Map
Native range describes natural occurrence, not the origin of this seed lot or every location where a plant can be grown.
Alaska and Hawaii are shown as insets. State-level range does not mean a plant occurs throughout every part of that state.
