Witch Hazel

When little else is in flower, Ozark witch hazel opens fragrant, spidery blooms in late winter. Clear yellow fall foliage gives it another season of color in borders and woodland edges. These multi-stemmed shrubs adapt well to clay soils, streambanks, and partial shade, making them versatile for hedges and naturalistic plantings. The early flowers offer rare pollen for insects active on mild days. Witch hazel seed is double dormant and often skips a full season, appearing in the second spring after sowing.
