Beech
Smooth silver-gray bark gives American beech a timeless, sculptural presence that stands out even in deep winter. Foliage turns golden bronze in autumn, and young trees often hold their papery leaves until spring. Edible beechnuts feed birds, squirrels, deer, and other wildlife. This long-lived shade tree makes a magnificent specimen for parks and large properties and is also a rewarding bonsai subject. Beech seedlings start slowly, yet sowing the nuts yourself is the most practical way to establish a tree meant to outlast generations.
