Chokecherry

Hardy enough for the coldest regions, chokecherry is a native shrub or small tree that perfumes spring with spikes of white flowers. Its dark, tart cherries are a traditional favorite for jelly, syrup, and wine once the pits are removed. Windbreaks, shelterbelts, erosion control, and reforestation all rely on this workhorse across cold regions. Pollinators feed on the blooms, birds and mammals eat the fruit, and many butterfly larvae feed on the leaves. Chokecherry seedlings grow quickly once they get going, making seed an inexpensive way to plant long shelterbelt rows.
