Sequoia
No tree on Earth is more massive than the giant sequoia, and raising one from seed is a gardening project to remember. Young trees form dense, symmetrical cones of blue-green, scale-like foliage above spongy, cinnamon-red bark. Given room, they become unforgettable specimens and long-lived windbreaks on large properties. Growers with limited space can train them as bonsai. The tiny, papery seeds benefit from a short chill and should rest on the surface of a moist, well-drained mix.
