Strawberry seed is tiny and slow compared with nursery plants, so begin with sterile fine-textured medium, shallow cells, and strong supplemental light. Use a sunny future bed with drainage and good air movement. Some cultivars germinate more evenly after a short cold-moist treatment; follow the packet for the specific variety.

Planting

Allow roughly 12–16 weeks for indoor development. Scatter seeds on the surface, press them down, and leave them exposed or barely dusted because light assists germination. Cover the tray to retain humidity, ventilate after sprouts appear, and transplant seedlings into separate cells once they can be handled. Harden them carefully before outdoor planting.

Watering

Surface-sown seed can wash away under a heavy stream; bottom-water or mist until roots anchor the medium. Garden plants prefer steady moisture near their shallow roots, especially during bloom and berry filling. Morning irrigation lets foliage dry before evening.

Fertilizer

Harvesting

Removing early flowers can help small transplants build stronger crowns. Control runners according to the chosen matted-row, hill, or container system, and keep developing crowns level with the soil rather than buried. Clean straw mulch protects plants from winter injury and keeps fruit off bare ground.

Pests & Diseases

Seed-grown strawberries are mainly threatened by damping-off, leaf spots, powdery mildew, and Botrytis during establishment. Sow in sanitized medium, provide strong light and airflow, and avoid keeping tiny seedlings saturated. Discard weak, distorted, or persistently spotted seedlings before transplanting to permanent beds.

Young seedlings are vulnerable to fungus gnats and damping-off; outdoor plants may attract slugs, tarnished plant bugs, mites, birds, and root weevils. Start with clean media, prevent stagnant humidity, remove damaged fruit promptly, and use netting before berries begin coloring.
