Before Planting

Prepare for Bupleurum (Hare's Ear) by selecting a full-sun to lightly shaded location with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Remove weeds, work compost into the bed, and provide good air circulation without exposing plants to severe wind. Prepare a fine seedbed and verify whether bupleurum (hare's ear) seed needs chilling, soaking, or light for germination.

Planting

Direct sow bupleurum in very early spring, or fall sow in mild climates. Cover seed about 1/4 inch and keep it cool; 2–4 weeks of cold-moist stratification can improve uneven germination. Avoid warm indoor conditions and root disturbance. Thin seedlings to 6–9 inches apart for strong, straight stems.

Watering

Aphids and thrips may cluster on bupleurum (hare's ear) buds, while mites, Japanese beetles, slugs, and caterpillars feed elsewhere. Remove badly damaged growth, collect visible pests, and choose pollinator-conscious controls only when monitoring shows a need.
