Tobacco

Burley 21 is heirloom Burley variety that is a long time favorite of growers. Its history dates back over 200 years. It grows to 6-7 feet and is a reliable producer of large heavy leaf. The leaves make a strong full flavored smoke that is commonly used as a blend in cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobaccos.

Bucak was developed in Turkey from a flu cured, bright leaf Virginian tobacco imported in the 1930's from the US. Averages 20 leaves per plant, 12"-14" wide and 22"-26" long. It tolerates heavy rains and wind well and will withstand early fall frosts with little or no damage. It air cures easily to a light brown.

Bursa is one of the largest and heaviest producing varieties of Turkish tobacco, growing up to 8' with 30-34 harvestable leaves per plant. It's best to use staking for this giant tobacco. The unique flavor is spicy and sweet and the smoke is highly aromatic. Bursa is an excellent tobacco for a pipe or blending in cigarettes.

Mount Pima is usually classified as a Rustica, although this may be incorrect. It has the characteristic typical of N. Tobaccums. The leaves are large and pointed and it produces a pink flowers typical of tobaccum varieties, instead of the rounded leaves and yellow flowers of Rusticas. It grows to 3-4 feet in height and is very hardy. Leaves cure to a light brown and are mild to smoke.

Mohawk Rustica is native to Central America as was widely cultivated by Native Americans and grown through out the southern US. It grows to 3' in height and is similar to Aztec, but with less branching. The leaves are thick, dark green in color and are among the largest of any Rustica variety. The flowers are a bright yellow and are densely packed. Mohawk is very high in nicotine content.

Magnolia is a cigar wrapper which produces a high quality oval shaped leaf averaging 16" wide by 20" to 24" long. It has little to no suckering before topping. The leaves turn a lighter green with yellowing tips and mottling when ripe.

Lancaster Seed Leaf, grown extensively around Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and is classified as a cigar filler. But its large leaves make it a good binder or wrapper as well. Cures to a deep brown color. The upper leaf can produce excellent "Pennsylvania maduro," for pipe blending.

Yumbo is a primitive strain of tobacco grown by the Yumbo tribe in the upper Amazon basin. It grows to 3' in height. The thick leaves are a dark green color averaging 9"-12" in width, and 14"-16" in length. The edges turn yellow when ripe and cured leaf has a nicotine content of 1.8%.

Yellow Orinoco is an heirloom bright leaf which originated from the Virginian Orinoco's. It grows to 5' producing an average of 16 leaves per plant below the crows foot. Suckering is low, and is less than with White Stemmed or Frog Eye Orinoco. Leaves are light to medium green and average 12" to 14" wide and 24" to 26" long, with yields of 3 oz of dried leaf per plant. Leaves air cure to a light brown.

Black Sea Samsun originated in the Samsun region of Turkey near the Black Sea. It's prized for rich flavor and aroma, but yet mild to smoke. An excellent blend for cigarettes or pipes, or on its own.

Limonka Rustica tobacco, also known simply as "Limonka," is a unique and highly sought-after variety prized for its distinctive flavor and aroma. Originating from the regions of Poland and Russia, Limonka Rustica is classified as a dark air-cured tobacco, known for its robustness and depth of flavor. The leaves of Limonka Rustica are typically medium to dark brown in color, with a slightly coarse texture.

La Palma Havana tobacco, hailing from the renowned tobacco-growing region of La Palma in Cuba, is esteemed for its rich history and exceptional quality. This variety, deeply rooted in the traditions of Cuban tobacco cultivation, is celebrated for its exquisite flavor and aroma, reminiscent of the finest Cuban cigars. La Palma Havana tobacco is characterized by its medium to dark brown leaves, carefully cultivated and expertly cured to preserve its unique characteristics.

The Big Gem Tobacco is an heirloom Bright Leaf variety that has a great production of over 25 large, bright green leaves per plant. This tobacco variety reaches 5.5' or more in height and each leaf can reach 30" long and 18" wide. The Big Gem is drought tolerant and sunburn resistant.

Walkers Broad Leaf is an heirloom cigar variety dating back to the 1880's, said to have originally been developed from the Maryland Broad Leaf. The leaves are from 12" to 16" wide and 20" to 24" in length, turning a light green and mottled when ripe. It can be used as a wrapper, binder or filler.

Little Cuba is a small bush like plant that matures very early. Blooms first appear in 28 days. Clipping the blooms will encourage more growth from below and 3-4 new branches will grow up to 3'-4' high. This will increase the yield of this small Cuban type tobacco and a second bloom will appear at about 60 days. The leaves are between 7"-10" in width and 10"-14" long. Leaves appearing before the first bloom will ripen first becoming a mottled yellow with yellow edges.

Little Dutch is an heirloom variety dating back to the 1880's. It is sweet aromatic tobacco used in pipe blends and as a cigar filler. It grow to around 3' in height and has narrow leaves growing up to 30" long. The long narrow leaves also make an excellent cigar wrapper. Excellent choice for container growing.

Most commonly used as a cigar binder but may be used as a filler or pipe tobacco blend or in cigarettes. It produces large leaves, has a tight upright columnar form.

Virginia Gold is a well known heirloom variety dating back well over 50 years. It grows to a height of 6'-7' with low suckering. The light green leaves are from 14" to 18" wide and 24" to 30" long, and turn a light yellow when ripe. The plants produce an average of 18 leaves per plant below the crows foot, with yields averaging 3 oz of dried leaf per plant.

Virginia Bright Leaf is an heirloom variety dating back many decades. It averages 6' in height with 18-20 leaves per plant below the crows foot. The light green leaves average 12" wide by 24" long and become a light yellow/green when ripe. Leaves began to ripen as the plant reaches bloom. Air cures easily to a light golden brown with yields averaging 3 oz of dried leaf per plant.

KY15 is a white stemmed high yielding Kentucky Burley. It has multiple disease resistance with excellent yield potential. Forms a plant with closely packed leaves with almost no suckers. Leaves turn yellow as they ripen, curling down around the edges. Excellent for curing and hanging stalks. The leaves dry to a light orange brown. Highly resistant to tobacco mosaic virus, wild-fire, and black root rot. Medium to high resistance to Fusarium wilt and tolerance to TEV.

Virginia 355 tobacco is a highly regarded variety within the tobacco industry, prized for its exceptional flavor, smooth smoking qualities, and consistent leaf characteristics. As a member of the flue-cured Virginia tobacco family, it undergoes a curing process that involves controlled heat to preserve its natural sugars and flavors. Virginia 355 is distinguished by its bright, lemon-yellow to deep orange leaves, which are medium to large in size and exhibit excellent texture and elasticity.

Virginia 15 is a light, aromatic cigarette and pipe tobacco. The plant grows to an average of 5' in height producing 22 leaves per plant. Leaves average 14" wide and up to 20" to 22" in length. 95%. It is resistant to most diseases.

Virginia 116 is a bright leaf Virginia Gold variety which grows to 4 1/2 feet in height. Good disease resistance. It produces an average of 19 leaves when topped, excluding bed leaves. Leaves are up to 24" long and 12" wide. Easy to air cure and dries a bright golden yellow. It is mild to smoke and is an excellent choice for a cigarette tobacco or in a pipe.

Vesta 64 is a well developed bright leaf Virginian type tobacco that grows up to 4 1/2 to 5 feet in height to the crows foot. The plant produces from 18 to 20 leaves on average that measure 20 to 26 inches in length and 10 to 12 inches wide. The leaf air cures to a light golden brown, or flu cures to a bright yellow. It is a vigorous grower and is a black shank resistant.

Aztec Rustica is native to central and South America. It grows to 30" high with abundant bright yellow flowers that are very attractive to bees and hummingbirds. Flowering lasts up to two months. Leaves air cure to a medium to dark brown and produce a very mild flavored smoke. Aztec has a very high nicotine content. The leaves are often used by home gardeners to make a very effective insecticide by soaking them in water to make a "tea".

Jasmine is a fast growing ornamental that can be planted in early spring. It starts blooming in only 3 weeks after transplant and produces a profusion of sweet smelling flowers that last all summer long. The flowers close during the day and reopen in the late afternoon. Jasmine has one of the sweetest fragrances of any flower we have grown and its scent will fill the evening air in the surrounding area. It is also very attractive to Hummingbirds

Japan 8 is a very sweet dark oriental tobacco with low nicotine content. It is a compact plant reaching 6' in height with long narrow leaves. The leaves average 8" wide and 24" long. Plants average 28 harvestable leaves. It can be air cures or sun cured. It is excellent as a blend for cigarettes or pipes. Air cured leaves are a deep brown and produce a mild smoke with a licorice like flavor.

TN 86, is the first burley tobacco variety having good resistance to TVMV and TEV diseases. TN 86 was released by the University of Tennessee as a commercial cultivar in 1986. The new cultivar, which is also resistant to black shank, black root rot, wildfire, and most strains of potato virus Y. TN 86 consistently out yields other burley cultivars. The cured leaf is generally reddish-tan in color and has great smoking quality.

A tall growing Hungarian variety that reaches 6-7 feet in height. Leaves are long and narrow and closely resembles Orinoco. Hungarian plants rise six-to-seven feet with narrow leaves. Sixty-five-to-seventy-day maturity suits a standard summer season. Growth strongly resembles traditional Orinoco types. Tall upright form carries long slender foliage.

Ainaro is a variety of Dark sun-cured leaf. It was collected from the tobacco garden of a simple home outside the town of Ainaro, by Anton Eise DeVries, during his exploration of Timor Leste in 2016. The most distinctive characteristic of its large leaves is their petiole (bare leaf stem), suggestive of some pre WW2, Japanese cigar varieties. It can be stalk-cut, and sun-cured on the stalk, or primed. The finished leaf has a spicy character. It also cooks into a tasty Cavendish. Suitable for pipe blending.
