Wild Thyme has a wonder fragrance and beautiful bloom that does well in most gardens. Spreads easily on its own and does well in drought tolerant locations. Forms a dense mat that create an excellent ground-cover. Plants are 6-12 inches tall, and the lavender flowers appear just above the foliage. As with many species in the mint family, the flowers of Wild Thyme are very attractive to honey bees and wild bees. Also know as lemon thyme, larger thyme, and broad-leaf thyme.

Before Planting

Reserve a full-sun site for Thyme with light, well-drained soil and good air circulation. Loosen compacted ground and incorporate only modest compost, since overly rich or wet soil can weaken thyme growth and flavor. Prepare a clean, fine seedbed or a freely draining container mix, and avoid fresh manure.

Planting

Thyme may be started indoors 6–10 weeks before the last frost; types that dislike root disturbance are better direct-sown after conditions become suitable. Keep the medium lightly and consistently moist until emergence, never saturated. Space thyme 12–18 inches apart.

Watering

Water thyme deeply, then allow the upper soil to dry before watering again. Established plants tolerate moderate drought and develop poorly in constantly wet or poorly drained conditions.

Fertilizer

Fertilize thyme sparingly, if at all. A light compost application or diluted balanced fertilizer in spring is usually sufficient; excessive fertility reduces flavor and creates weak growth.

Harvesting

Harvest thyme leaves or tender stems after plants establish, preferably before flowering for strongest flavor. Cut just above a leaf node and remove no more than one-third of the plant at once.

Tips

Pinch thyme regularly to encourage branching, and remove flower buds when leaf production is the goal. Protect perennial plants from winter wetness and divide woody or crowded growth as needed.

Pests & Diseases

Thyme is most vulnerable to Phytophthora or Pythium root rot; powdery mildew, Botrytis, and leaf spots occur in humid plantings. Keep crowns high and dry, thin woody mats, and avoid rich, moisture-retentive soil. Replace plants with extensive black roots instead of propagating them.

Leaf damage on thyme may come from aphids, mites, whiteflies, leafminers, slugs, or Japanese beetles. Isolate container plants when needed and avoid spraying edible leaves close to harvest unless the label permits it.
