Sugar Cube is a personal-size melon with explosive sweet flavor. Produces an abundance of uniform, heavily netted 2.5 lb. fruits the size of a grapefruit. Flesh has a dark-orange appearance that is crisp to the bite. Sugar Cube is highly disease resistant and provides an exceptionally long harvest window. Well-suited for northern and southern regions. Give Melon a full-sun, warm location with fertile, well-drained soil and ample space for vines. Incorporate compost and correct nutrients according to a soil test, then shape raised beds or hills where drainage is slow. Wait until the soil is warm, and install trellises before planting if melon will be trained vertically.

Planting

Melon can be direct-sown after frost when soil reaches about 65–70°F, or started indoors 3–4 weeks earlier in individual cells. Keep the medium warm and evenly moist until emergence. Harden seedlings gradually and transplant without disturbing the sensitive roots. Space trellised melons 18–24 inches apart or ground-running vines 3–5 feet apart.

Watering

Maintain steady moisture around melon, especially from flowering through fruit enlargement. Water deeply rather than frequently sprinkling, and avoid alternating severe dryness with heavy irrigation.

Fertilizer
