Key Attributes
About Staghorn, Sumac Seed
Velvety, antler-like branches give this bold native shrub or small tree its name. Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina) carries long, tropical-looking compound leaves that blaze scarlet, orange and gold in fall, and upright cones of fuzzy crimson fruit that persist through winter. It thrives in dry, poor soils where little else grows, making it excellent for slopes, roadsides and naturalized areas. The fruit is also used to make a tangy, lemonade-like drink.

Its Role in the Native Ecosystem
Staghorn Sumac's early summer flowers are busy with native bees and honey bees. Its persistent fruit cones are an important late-winter emergency food for robins, bluebirds, grouse and turkeys. Thickets give cover to birds and small mammals, and the leaves host several native moth caterpillars.
Staghorn Sumac Native Range Map
Native range describes natural occurrence, not the origin of this seed lot or every location where a plant can be grown.
Alaska and Hawaii are shown as insets. State-level range does not mean a plant occurs throughout every part of that state.
