Before Planting

Give Melon a full-sun, warm location with fertile, well-drained soil and ample space for vines. Incorporate compost and correct nutrients according to a soil test, then shape raised beds or hills where drainage is slow. Wait until the soil is warm, and install trellises before planting if melon will be trained vertically.

Planting

Melon can be direct-sown after frost when soil reaches about 65–70°F, or started indoors 3–4 weeks earlier in individual cells. Keep the medium warm and evenly moist until emergence. Harden seedlings gradually and transplant without disturbing the sensitive roots. Space trellised melons 18–24 inches apart or ground-running vines 3–5 feet apart.

Watering

Maintain steady moisture around melon, especially from flowering through fruit enlargement. Water deeply rather than frequently sprinkling, and avoid alternating severe dryness with heavy irrigation.

Fertilizer

Feed melon during active growth with a balanced vegetable fertilizer. Keep nitrogen moderate after flowering begins to prevent excessive vines or leaves at the expense of fruit.

Harvesting

Harvest when fruit develops its expected color and aroma and the blossom end yields slightly. Slip-type melons detach easily from the vine; cut non-slip types when tendrils and rind indicate maturity.

Tips

Encourage melon pollination by growing flowering plants nearby and avoiding insecticides during bloom. Support climbing vines early, and place boards beneath ground-grown fruit to reduce rot.
