Prairie Coreopsis, also called Stiff Tickseed, has long brightened the dry prairies of central North America. Some Indigenous communities historically used boiled Coreopsis seeds in topical remedies. Coreopsis may develop Botrytis, rust, powdery mildew, Rhizoctonia crown rot, or virus disease. Rust pustules and gray mold can be pruned away; mottled, distorted plants should be discarded rather than propagated. Avoid rich, wet soil, which creates soft growth and shortens the life of the crown.
Check coreopsis regularly for aphids, thrips, spider mites, Japanese beetles, slugs, and caterpillars. Inspect leaf undersides first, remove larger pests by hand, and avoid broad-spectrum sprays around open flowers.
