About Ponytail, Palm Seed, Palm Seed

Ponytail aka, Beaucarnea recurvata or Nolina recurvata, often gets mistaken for a palm, but actually is a semi-succulent. This unique looking tree-like perennial has a large swollen trunk, which stores water. The dark green leaves are long and thin and emerge from the trunk like a fountain. Ponytail is a well-known robust, sun-loving houseplant. In mild to warmer climates it can be used as a waterwise patio plant or for landscaping. Also know as Bottle palm or Elephant's foot.

Give Palm a warm location with bright, indirect light and protection from cold drafts and harsh midday sun. Use a clean, well-drained potting mix suited to palm and a container with unobstructed drainage holes. Sanitize containers, inspect planting material for pests or rot, and pre-moisten the mix before planting.

Planting

Start palm indoors in a clean, free-draining medium, generally maintaining 70–80°F unless the species prefers cooler conditions. Keep the medium evenly moist but never saturated, and expect slow or irregular germination from woody or tropical seed. Provide bright filtered light after emergence. Pot seedlings individually once sturdy, disturbing the roots as little as possible.

Watering

Check palm rather than watering on a fixed schedule. Water deeply once the upper potting mix dries slightly, allowing complete drainage and using less during cool or low-light periods.

Fertilizer

Apply balanced houseplant fertilizer to palm at reduced strength during spring and summer. Withhold during dormancy or stress, and flush the pot occasionally with plain water.

Harvesting

Harvest only mature outer palm fronds that are fully expanded and undamaged. Cut cleanly near the base without injuring the trunk, emerging central spear, or enough foliage to weaken the plant.

Tips

Repot palm only when roots crowd the container, moving up one pot size. Rotate for even light, clean foliage periodically, and protect from abrupt temperature changes.

Pests & Diseases

Palm seedlings may suffer damping-off, while established palms develop leaf spots, bud rot, or Ganoderma butt rot. Keep water out of the growing point and sanitize pruning tools. A collapsing spear or conk at the trunk base requires expert diagnosis; severely affected palms may be hazardous and cannot be cured.

Spider mites, scale, mealybugs, and palm-specific weevils may attack palms. Inspect the central spear and leaf undersides, isolate indoor infestations, remove pests manually, and avoid injuring the growing point.
