Tips
Pests & Diseases
Anthracnose, brown spot, powdery mildew, and Pythium root rot are important lupine diseases. Anthracnose bends stems into a characteristic crook and may be seedborne. Purchase clean seed, remove affected plants, rotate legumes, and avoid overhead watering. Perennial crowns require excellent drainage through winter.
Lupine may attract sap-feeding aphids and leafhoppers, chewing beetles, weevils, and cutworms. Scout new growth and pods, use physical removal, and preserve lady beetles and other beneficial insects.

Its Role in the Native Ecosystem
Perennial Lupine (Lupinus perennis) is an important caterpillar host, including for Karner blue and frosted elfin butterflies where those insects occur. Its spring growth and flowers contribute to open, sandy plant communities. Preserve healthy foliage and suitable surrounding habitat; planting lupine alone does not guarantee the return of these butterflies.
Perennial Lupine Native Range Map
Native range describes natural occurrence, not the origin of this seed lot or every location where a plant can be grown.
Alaska and Hawaii are shown as insets. State-level range does not mean a plant occurs throughout every part of that state.
