Before Planting

A successful Strawberry planting begins with a full-sun site with fertile, well-drained soil and good air circulation where strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, or eggplants have not recently grown. Remove perennial weeds and incorporate compost. Test and adjust soil before planting, and arrange beds and irrigation so crowns remain at soil level and foliage can dry quickly.

Planting

Set dormant crowns or transplants in early spring, or plant plugs in late summer where they can establish before winter. Spread roots downward and keep the crown level with the soil surface; planting too deeply can cause rot. Water immediately to settle the soil and maintain even moisture during establishment. Remove weak plants rather than allowing crowded crowns to compete.

Watering

Provide 1–1½ inches of water weekly, with consistent moisture during flowering, fruiting, and runner establishment. Water early at soil level or with drip irrigation to keep fruit and foliage drier.

Fertilizer

Apply fertilizer after establishment or renovation according to soil-test recommendations. Avoid heavy spring nitrogen on bearing plants, which promotes excessive leaves, soft fruit, and increased disease pressure.

Harvesting

Pick strawberries when berries are fully colored across the shoulders and have developed their characteristic aroma. Pinch or cut the stem with the green cap attached, handle gently, and harvest every few days.

Tips

Remove flowers from newly planted June-bearing strawberries during their establishment year for stronger crowns. Renovate mature beds after harvest, control runners, and protect plants with clean winter mulch in cold climates.

Pests & Diseases

Strawberry plants can introduce anthracnose, red stele, Verticillium wilt, viruses, and crown rot. Buy certified healthy stock and reject plants with discolored crowns or weak roots. Plant in well-drained soil, remove infected fruit and foliage, renovate beds, and replace chronically declining patches with clean plants.

Slugs, tarnished plant bugs, spider mites, root weevils, birds, and rodents may damage strawberries. Keep beds clean, use barriers or netting, remove overripe fruit, and inspect leaf undersides regularly.
