About Golden West, Poppy Seed
Golden West is a classic heirloom California Poppy, introduced in the early 1900s, with large, satiny golden-yellow flowers marked by a deep orange heart. The cup-shaped blooms rise above finely divided blue-green foliage on plants 12-18 inches tall and begin flowering about 6-8 weeks after sowing, continuing through spring and summer. Golden West is drought tolerant, grows well in poor soil, and reseeds readily in most areas. It is a short-lived perennial in zones 8-10 and is grown as an annual in colder climates.

Tips
Pests & Diseases
Poppies may develop downy mildew, powdery mildew, Botrytis, damping-off, or bacterial blight. Thin seedlings early and remove plants with distorted, gray-purple growth beneath leaves. Avoid saving seed from blighted capsules, rotate planting sites, and clear volunteer poppies that perpetuate disease.
Tender growth and blooms on poppy may be damaged by aphids, thrips, spider mites, beetles, slugs, or caterpillars. Use hand removal for larger pests and targeted, labeled controls for confirmed infestations, avoiding sprays during pollinator activity.
