For Celery, select a full-sun to lightly shaded site with rich, moisture-retentive soil that still drains well. Incorporate generous compost and correct fertility and pH according to a soil test. Plan dependable irrigation and harden transplants carefully, because drought, heat, or prolonged cold before establishment can cause poor stalks or bolting.

Planting

Start celery indoors 10–12 weeks before the last spring frost. Keep the fine seed warm, exposed to light, and consistently moist until its slow germination is complete. Grow seedlings under bright light, pot them up if crowded, and harden gradually without prolonged chilling. Transplant after hard freezes are past, keeping the crown at soil level.

Watering

Maintain consistently moist soil with about 1–2 inches of water weekly. Celery becomes stringy or hollow under drought stress, so water deeply before the soil dries while avoiding waterlogged crowns.

Fertilizer

Celery is a heavy feeder. Side-dress with a nitrogen-containing fertilizer several weeks after transplanting and again during rapid stalk growth, following soil-test and label recommendations.

Harvesting

Celery is ready when it displays the mature color, texture, and size expected for the crop. Cut, lift, or pick carefully to protect the plant and remaining harvest.

Tips

Blanch self-blanching or green celery only when a paler flavor is desired, using sleeves or loose soil without covering the growing center. Shade cloth helps prevent stress during hot weather.

Pests & Diseases

Septoria late blight is especially destructive in celery; early blight, anthracnose leaf curl, bacterial blight, and pink rot also occur. Tiny black fruiting bodies inside tan leaf spots help identify Septoria. Use disease-free seed and transplants, remove celery residue, rotate Apiaceae crops, and keep irrigation splash off the canopy.

Aphids, celery leafminers, cutworms, slugs, and tarnished plant bugs may damage celery. Inspect inner stalks and leaf undersides, remove infested foliage, use barriers, and encourage beneficial insects.
