About Eastern Red, Cedar Seed
Windbreaks, screens and erosion control plantings rarely get a better candidate than this tough, adaptable native evergreen. Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) has dense, aromatic foliage and a neat pyramidal to columnar shape, and it shrugs off cold, heat, drought, wind and poor soil. Female trees carry dusty blue berries through fall and winter that birds love, and the fragrant reddish wood has been prized for generations.

Pests & Diseases
Cedar-apple rust forms orange galls but rarely harms the cedar itself. Phomopsis tip blight can affect young seedlings in wet weather; give good air flow. Avoid planting near apple orchards.
Bagworms are the most common pest; hand-pick bags in winter or spring. Spider mites can appear in hot, dry weather.

Its Role in the Native Ecosystem
Eastern Red Cedar's dense evergreen branches give birds year-round shelter and nesting sites. Its blue berry-like cones feed cedar waxwings, bluebirds, robins and many wintering birds. It is the host plant for the juniper hairstreak butterfly.
Eastern Red Cedar Native Range Map
Native range describes natural occurrence, not the origin of this seed lot or every location where a plant can be grown.
Alaska and Hawaii are shown as insets. State-level range does not mean a plant occurs throughout every part of that state.
