Before Planting

Raspberries reward careful site choice because a planting can remain for years. Select full sun, fertile well-drained soil, and distance from wild brambles that may harbor disease. Remove perennial weeds before planting and install support for long or trailing canes.

Planting

Plant certified disease-free stock in early spring. Spread roots in a broad hole, set the crown at nursery depth, and space red raspberries about two feet apart or black and purple types about three feet apart. Water immediately and cut back damaged canes.

Watering

Shallow roots need reliable moisture from bloom through harvest and again while new canes develop. Water the soil rather than the fruit, and use mulch to limit evaporation without burying crowns. Drainage remains essential during wet periods.

Fertilizer

Feed according to soil results and cane vigor, usually with nitrogen in early spring. Avoid late or excessive applications that create soft growth vulnerable to winter injury. Compost can maintain organic matter between rows.

Harvesting

Pick when berries are fully colored, sweet, and release from the receptacle without pulling. Gather every one or two days in shallow containers, keep fruit shaded, and refrigerate promptly without washing until use.

Tips

Pruning depends on fruiting type. Remove spent floricanes after harvest; thin summer-bearing rows to strong canes, or mow fall-bearing red raspberries during dormancy for one autumn crop. Keep rows narrow and supported.

Pests & Diseases

Anthracnose, spur blight, cane blight, Botrytis fruit rot, and Phytophthora root rot affect raspberries. Purchase certified plants, remove spent and diseased canes, and thin rows for rapid drying. Harvest frequently, refrigerate promptly, and avoid planting into poorly drained sites where root rot has occurred.

Spotted-wing drosophila, cane borers, Japanese beetles, aphids, mites, birds, and cane diseases can reduce harvests. Remove old canes, collect ripe fruit frequently, eliminate wild hosts nearby, and protect winter canes from rabbits.
