Before Planting

True potato seed needs a nursery setup, unlike conventional seed tubers. Fill sanitized cells with clean, airy medium and reserve a sunny garden bed that has not recently held potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, or eggplants. Loose, slightly acidic soil allows the eventual tubers to expand without distortion.

Planting

Sow indoors about 6–8 weeks before the last frost, covering the tiny seed only shallowly. Gentle warmth encourages emergence; intense light afterward prevents threadlike growth. Shift crowded seedlings into larger cells, then harden them slowly and transplant after frost, leaving enough stem exposed for later hilling.

Watering

Use a fine mist or bottom watering while seedlings are delicate, allowing air back into the medium between applications. Garden plants perform best with steady moisture as stolons form tubers. Taper watering when the vines begin their natural decline.

Fertilizer

Begin with weak liquid feeding only after seedlings carry true leaves. In the garden, potatoes need balanced nutrition with adequate potassium and restrained nitrogen. Place granular fertilizer away from the transplant roots to avoid burning them.

Harvesting

First-year plants can yield usable potatoes even though they began as botanical seed. Dig after the vines yellow and collapse, taking care not to pierce the smaller tubers. Let harvested potatoes dry and set their skins before handling or storing them extensively.

Tips

As stems lengthen, draw soil or clean mulch around them so developing potatoes remain dark and free of greening. Keep transplants growing steadily without excessive greenhouse heat. Removing volunteer nightshades and rotating the bed reduces carryover problems.

Pests & Diseases

Botanical potato seed avoids many tuber-borne diseases but seedlings remain vulnerable to damping-off, late blight, early blight, and viruses. Use sanitized mix, provide airflow, and discard weak or mosaic seedlings. Keep each seedling line separate, since disease response and tuber quality vary genetically.

Damping-off can eliminate seedlings before garden pests ever appear, making clean media and careful watering important. Outdoors, watch for Colorado potato beetles, flea beetles, aphids, leafhoppers, wireworms, and grubs. Inspect frequently enough to remove beetles and egg masses before populations build.
