Calico Beardtongue (Penstemon calycosus) is a distinctive North American native plant. Pink tubular flowers with contrasting interiors rise above glossy foliage and invite bees into early-summer gardens. It matures at approximately 36 inches tall and flowers from late spring to early summer through early to mid summer. Plant it in full sun to partial shade, in medium to medium-wet conditions, with loamy soil or clay soil. Space plants 12–18 inches apart for healthy growth and airflow.

Penstemon may develop powdery mildew, rust, leaf spots, or crown rot. Most problems intensify in crowded or winter-wet sites. Remove infected stems, keep mulch away from crowns, and divide only healthy growth. Persistent basal collapse calls for improved drainage and a different planting location.
Penstemon can attract aphids, thrips, mites, Japanese beetles, slugs, and leaf-chewing caterpillars. Knock off small colonies with water, handpick larger feeders, and reserve labeled treatments for significant damage.
