Before Planting

Prepare a cool-season bed with loose soil, compost, and partial afternoon shade where spring warms quickly. Clear flea-beetle host weeds and plan short succession rows rather than one large planting.

Planting

Arugula is best direct-sown during cool weather, beginning when the soil is workable. Keep the upper soil evenly moist until emergence, and provide light shade if warm conditions threaten germination. Thin baby-leaf stands to 1–2 inches apart or mature plants to 4–6 inches. Make small succession sowings every 1–3 weeks while temperatures remain suitable.

Watering

Arugula turns sharply flavored and bolts when moisture fluctuates. Keep the root zone evenly damp with gentle irrigation, using mulch as temperatures rise; avoid splashing soil onto harvestable leaves.

Fertilizer

Compost supplies most needs. If repeated leaf harvests slow regrowth, side-dress lightly with nitrogen, then water it in; excessive feeding creates tender growth attractive to aphids.

Harvesting

Begin arugula harvest when leaves are 3–6 inches long. Cut individual outer leaves above the growing point for repeat picking, or shear the whole stand about an inch above the crown. Harvest during cool weather and before flower stalks elongate, when leaves become hotter and tougher.

Tips

Sow small amounts every two to three weeks and use shade cloth as days lengthen. Harvest outer leaves young, or cut the whole rosette above the crown for possible regrowth.

Pests & Diseases

Downy mildew, white rust, damping-off, and bacterial or fungal leaf spots commonly affect arugula. Yellow angular patches, white pustules beneath leaves, dark lesions, or collapsing seedlings warrant action. Rotate brassicas, use clean seed and mix, avoid overhead watering and crowding, remove infected leaves, and harvest only dry foliage.

Flea beetles create numerous pinholes and can destroy seedlings; cabbageworms, aphids, leafminers, and slugs damage older foliage. Install insect netting immediately after sowing, rotate brassicas, and remove mined leaves. Inspect undersides carefully before harvesting leaves intended for fresh use.
