Plan around your subzone

Choose Zone 7A or Zone 7B

Zone 7B generally warms a little earlier in spring and stays mild a little later in fall. These broad windows should still be adjusted for your exact frost dates and current weather.

Planning guidance only. Soil temperature, weather, elevation, variety maturity, and protection such as row cover can move these windows.

Spring in Zone 7

Start cool crops early, then wait for warm soil.

Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, peppers, and tomatoes benefit from indoor starts. Beans, corn, cucumbers, squash, melons, and okra should wait for settled warmth.

Fall in Zone 7

Use summer to prepare the second season.

Start fall brassicas indoors in early to midsummer, then direct sow roots and greens as temperatures begin to ease. Give fall crops extra time because growth slows with shorter days.
