Choose the right site
Select a location with full sun and well-drained soil. Rotate away from areas that recently held corn when pest or disease pressure has been high.

Prepare the bed

Harvest at peak quality

Should I direct sow corn or start it indoors?
Direct sowing is generally preferred because corn grows quickly and its roots dislike disturbance. Why did my corn seed fail to germinate?
Cold, saturated soil is a common cause because kernels can rot before emergence. Wait for reliably warm soil, avoid overwatering, plant at the depth recommended for your soil texture, and check seed quality. Supersweet types can be especially sensitive to cold soil.
Why plant corn in a block instead of one long row?
Corn is wind pollinated. Every developing kernel is connected to a silk that needs pollen, so several neighboring short rows provide better pollen coverage than a single isolated row.
Why are kernels missing from the tip or middle of the ear?
Incomplete pollination can result from drought around silking, poor block arrangement, very tight spacing, pollen shed ending before silks are receptive, heat combined with dry soil, or fertility problems. Keep moisture steady around tasseling and silking and plant several short rows together.
Can I grow different corn varieties together?
Yes, but overlapping pollen can alter eating or popping quality in the current harvest. Separate incompatible corn types by distance or by enough planting time that their tasseling and silking periods do not overlap. Follow the isolation directions for the varieties selected.
Should I remove corn suckers or side shoots?
No. Some varieties naturally make more side shoots, and removing them usually does not improve yield. Cutting them can create wounds and extra work without helping the main stalk.
How can I harvest sweet corn earlier?
Choose an early-maturing variety, use a warm site, wait for appropriate soil conditions, and consider season-extension methods suited to your climate. In short seasons, carefully handled young transplants may help, but do not keep fast-growing corn confined too long.
How do I know when sweet corn is ready?

How quickly should I use sweet corn after picking?
