Before Planting

Test soil before barley planting and correct pH, phosphorus, and potassium deficiencies. Produce a firm, fine seedbed, eliminate volunteer cereals and grassy weeds, and select a variety suited to spring, winter, forage, or malting use.

Planting

Sow spring barley as soon as soil is workable; plant winter barley early enough in fall to establish before freezing. Drill seed about 1–1 1/2 inches deep in a firm seedbed, shallower in heavy soil. Follow the intended grain, forage, or cover-crop seeding rate rather than thinning the established stand.

Watering

Barley needs reliable moisture from emergence through tillering and again during heading and grain fill. Avoid waterlogging, and reduce late irrigation as kernels mature to limit lodging and harvest delays.

Fertilizer

Set nitrogen from soil tests, yield goal, previous crop, and end use. Apply less for malting barley, where excessive nitrogen raises grain protein and lodging risk; place phosphorus and potassium according to test results.

Harvesting

For grain, harvest barley when heads and straw turn golden and kernels are hard enough to resist a thumbnail, then dry thoroughly before threshing or storage. For forage, cut at boot through early-head stage. Cover-crop barley should be terminated before mature seed can volunteer.

Tips

Use certified seed and rotate away from cereals to reduce seedborne and residue-borne disease. Harvest grain when heads and straw are dry, testing moisture before storage to prevent heating and mold.

Pests & Diseases

Leaf and stripe rusts, powdery mildew, net blotch, scald, and Fusarium head blight are major barley concerns. Scout for rust-colored pustules, white growth, patterned leaf lesions, or prematurely bleached spikelets. Plant resistant, clean seed; rotate cereals; manage residue and volunteer grain; avoid excessive nitrogen; and harvest and dry grain promptly.

Armyworms and cutworms chew barley leaves, aphids feed inside rolled foliage and may transmit barley yellow dwarf virus, and cereal leaf beetles strip tissue between veins. Scout field edges and lower leaves. Encourage predators, control volunteer cereals, and act before armyworms move into adjacent crops.
