Before Planting

Ranunculus produces best in cool conditions with bright sun and exceptionally free drainage. Before planting, select firm dry claws without mold, loosen the bed, and incorporate compost sparingly. Raised beds are useful where winter or spring rain would otherwise collect around the crowns.

Planting

Plant claw-like tuberous roots in fall where winters are mild or in early spring after severe cold in colder regions. Soak them briefly as directed, then place the claws downward and crown upward at the package depth. Space for airflow, water once, and protect emerging growth from hard freezes.

Watering

After the initial watering, keep the bed only lightly moist until shoots appear. Active plants appreciate even moisture through bud development, but saturated ground causes rapid decay. Taper irrigation after flowering as leaves begin to yellow.

Fertilizer

Rich soil can produce lush foliage at the expense of sturdy stems. Use a light balanced or low-nitrogen feeding after growth begins, repeating only if plants remain pale or weak. Never place fertilizer directly against the crown.

Harvesting

Cut when buds feel soft and colored but have not fully opened; blooms continue unfolding in water. Harvest in the cool morning, leave basal foliage behind, and remove finished stems to encourage remaining buds.

Tips

Support tall stems where wind is common and deadhead garden plants regularly. In cold climates, lift the tuberous roots after foliage dies, dry them, and store them in a cool, dark, frost-free place for replanting.

Pests & Diseases

Ranunculus corms are vulnerable to Fusarium, Pythium, Rhizoctonia, Botrytis, and bacterial soft rot. Inspect before soaking and discard pieces that are soft, moldy, or discolored. Use clean water and well-drained soil, avoid prolonged soaking, and remove collapsing plants with their corms before decay spreads.

Aphids, thrips, slugs, spider mites, and tuber rot are the primary concerns. Inspect tightly folded new growth, remove badly infested stems, ventilate protected plantings, and correct wet soil before treating secondary pest problems.
