Before Planting

Before planting Peanut, select a full-sun site with loose, sandy, well-drained soil where peanuts and other legumes have not recently grown. Test the soil and correct calcium and pH needs before planting, avoiding excessive nitrogen. Use sound, unshelled or carefully shelled seed, inoculate with peanut-specific rhizobia when needed, and wait for warm soil.

Planting

Direct sow peanuts only after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 65°F. Plant sound kernels with the seed coat intact, handling them gently to avoid damage. Keep soil evenly moist through germination but never waterlogged. Thin only where seedlings are crowded, and avoid transplanting because disturbing the developing root system can reduce establishment.

Watering

Keep soil evenly moist through flowering, pegging, and pod development. Water deeply when the upper soil dries, then reduce irrigation as pods mature; saturated soil promotes disease and poor pod quality.

Fertilizer

Fertilize peanut according to soil-test results, usually without added nitrogen. Excess nitrogen reduces nodulation and favors excessive foliage, while phosphorus or potassium may be needed on deficient soils.

Harvesting

Dig peanuts when foliage yellows and inner pod shells show dark veining. Loosen the entire plant carefully, shake off soil, and cure plants with pods attached in a dry, ventilated location.

Tips

Keep the soil surface loose and weed-free as pegs enter the ground, cultivating only shallowly. Avoid disturbing plants after pegging begins, and hill loose soil lightly where needed.

Pests & Diseases

Early and late leaf spots, southern stem rot, rust, and Aspergillus contamination threaten peanuts. Rotate with grasses, bury or remove infected residue, and avoid injuring pods at harvest. Cure promptly under dry, ventilated conditions; discard moldy, damaged, or poorly dried pods rather than eating or saving them.

Thrips, leafhoppers, cutworms, wireworms, and spider mites may attack peanuts. Scout young leaves and the soil surface, rotate planting sites, control weeds, and avoid disturbing beneficial insects.
