Growing Instructions

Growing Instructions

Before Planting

Use a bright, well-drained site and a lean, free-draining propagation mix. Grevilleas dislike waterlogged soil and many are sensitive to phosphorus, so avoid manure, rich compost, and ordinary high-phosphorus fertilizers.

Planting

Sow fresh seed in a clean, free-draining mix, cover lightly, and keep it warm with steady moisture and airflow. Germination can be irregular. Move seedlings into individual pots while small, handle the delicate roots gently, and transplant after hardening when conditions suit the species.

Watering

Keep the seed mix moist but never saturated. Water young plants regularly while roots establish; afterward, water deeply and allow the surface to dry between applications rather than irrigating on a fixed schedule.

Fertilizer

Feed sparingly, if at all, with a fertilizer labeled for phosphorus-sensitive native plants. Do not substitute standard bloom boosters or high-phosphorus products, which can injure Grevillea.

Harvesting

For cut flowers or foliage, choose firm stems when the first flowers in a cluster are opening and most buds still show color. Cut during the cool part of the day with clean pruners, remove leaves that would sit below water, and condition stems promptly.

Tips

Protect seedlings from hard frost and avoid repeated root disturbance. Once plants are established, prune lightly after flowering to encourage dense growth; avoid cutting far back into old bare wood unless the species is known to reshoot.

Pests & Diseases

Phytophthora root rot is the principal Grevillea disease; leaf spots and cankers occur less often. Sudden wilt or dieback in moist soil should prompt root inspection. Use clean, highly draining media, keep tools and footwear free of contaminated soil, and never replant susceptible Grevillea directly into a confirmed Phytophthora site.

Scale insects, mealybugs, spider mites, caterpillars, and root rot may occur. Check stems and leaf undersides, improve airflow, and correct excess moisture first; use a control labeled for the identified pest only when needed.
