Before Planting

A successful Geranium planting begins with a full-sun to lightly shaded location with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Remove weeds, work compost into the bed, and provide good air circulation without exposing plants to severe wind. Prepare a fine seedbed and verify whether geranium seed needs chilling, soaking, or light for germination.

Planting

Start geranium indoors 4–10 weeks before the last spring frost, or direct sow after frost where the season is long. Keep the medium warm and evenly moist until emergence, then provide strong light and airflow. Harden seedlings gradually before transplanting into warm soil. Space seed-grown geraniums about 8–12 inches apart.

Watering

Geranium performs best with regular, moderate watering. Keep the root zone evenly moist, allow slight surface drying between applications, and avoid wetting foliage late in the day.

Fertilizer

Geranium needs only moderate feeding. Use diluted balanced fertilizer during active growth, following label rates and limiting nitrogen so plants remain compact and flower freely.

Harvesting

Harvest geranium as buds begin opening or when blooms reach full color, depending on intended use. Cut above a branching point, place stems in water promptly, and remove spent flowers regularly.

Tips

Remove faded geranium blooms before seed forms to encourage continued flowering. Shear lightly if plants become leggy, and protect containers from drying faster than garden beds.

Pests & Diseases

Geraniums are prone to bacterial blight, Botrytis, rust, blackleg, and root rot. Bacterial blight causes V-shaped leaf lesions and rapid wilt; discard the entire plant and nearby cuttings. Propagate from clean stock, keep irrigation from splashing between plants, and disinfect tools and benches after handling symptoms.

Monitor geranium for aphids, thrips, mites, beetles, slugs, and chewing caterpillars. Remove badly infested growth, use physical controls first, and apply labeled treatments outside pollinator-active hours.
