Before Planting

Ornamental alliums are most impressive in sunny, freely draining ground where their upright flower heads can rise through lower companion plants. Correct heavy or persistently wet soil before purchase, since winter moisture rots dormant bulbs. Keep bulbs dry and shaded until planting, rejecting any that feel soft or show mold.

Planting

Plant in autumn while the ground remains workable. Place the basal plate downward and the pointed tip upward; smaller bulbs commonly sit 3–4 inches deep, while large types may require 6–8 inches. Follow the package depth and spacing, group bulbs for visual impact, backfill gently, and water once to settle the soil.

Watering

Autumn moisture helps roots form, but established alliums dislike continuously wet ground. Natural rainfall is often adequate through dormancy. During active spring growth, irrigate only when the root zone dries, then reduce water as foliage yellows.

Fertilizer

Compost incorporated before planting generally supplies enough nutrition in ordinary garden soil. Avoid routine high-phosphorus bulb fertilizer unless testing identifies a deficiency. A light balanced feeding as shoots emerge can support plants growing in lean beds.

Harvesting

Cut ornamental allium stems when florets begin opening for fresh arrangements, or wait until the heads dry for crafts and seed saving. Garden displays last longest when faded heads are removed only after their ornamental value declines.

Tips

Leave the foliage untouched until it yellows naturally; those leaves are replenishing the bulb for next year. Hide declining foliage behind perennials rather than tying or cutting it green. Divide congested clumps after dormancy when flowering begins to weaken.

Pests & Diseases

White rot, Botrytis leaf blight or neck rot, downy mildew, and Fusarium basal rot are important concerns. Yellowing, collapsing leaves, fuzzy growth, or soft bulbs require attention. Plant clean, firm bulbs in well-drained soil, avoid overhead watering, remove infected plants, sanitize tools, and rotate away from alliums where disease occurs.

Alliums are usually avoided by deer and rodents, but onion flies, thrips, slugs, and bulb rots can occur. Examine bulbs before planting, maintain drainage, rotate edible alliums where applicable, and remove collapsing plants that show spreading decay.
