The Italian Cocozelle is a bush type of squash plant that produces high yields of the long, tender, dark green fruits. This Italian zucchini is very flavorful and tender. This variety is best when harvested at 12" long or smaller. The Cocozelle is excellent for slicing, frying, and steaming and is also a good freezing and canning variety. Pick often when the squash is young to prolong harvest. Harvesting zucchini when it is young and tender offers the best flavor and eating quality. Before Planting

Before planting Zucchini, select a full-sun, warm location with fertile, well-drained soil and ample space for vines. Incorporate compost and correct nutrients according to a soil test, then shape raised beds or hills where drainage is slow. Wait until the soil is warm, and install trellises before planting if zucchini will be trained vertically.

Planting

Zucchini can be direct-sown after frost when soil reaches about 65–70°F, or started indoors 3–4 weeks earlier in individual cells. Keep the medium warm and evenly moist until emergence. Harden seedlings gradually and transplant without disturbing the sensitive roots. Space zucchini plants 24–36 inches apart.

Watering

Maintain steady moisture around zucchini, especially from flowering through fruit enlargement. Water deeply rather than frequently sprinkling, and avoid alternating severe dryness with heavy irrigation.

Fertilizer

Feed zucchini during active growth with a balanced vegetable fertilizer. Keep nitrogen moderate after flowering begins to prevent excessive vines or leaves at the expense of fruit.

Harvesting

Cut zucchini while fruit is tender, glossy, and reaches the intended size, before seeds enlarge and skin toughens. Harvest every one or two days and use a knife to avoid damaging stems.

Tips

Encourage zucchini pollination by growing flowering plants nearby and avoiding insecticides during bloom. Support climbing vines early, and place boards beneath ground-grown fruit to reduce rot.

Powdery mildew, downy mildew, Fusarium crown rot, Phytophthora blight, and mosaic viruses affect zucchini. Choose resistant varieties, rotate cucurbits, and keep beds well drained. Remove vines with mosaic, permanent wilt, or water-soaked stem bases. Harvest frequently and discard fruit with soft, sunken, or expanding lesions.

Zucchini pests include cucumber beetles, squash bugs, borers, aphids, and spider mites. Protect seedlings early, rotate planting areas, and avoid broad-spectrum sprays while flowers attract pollinators.
