Tips
Pests & Diseases
Scout regularly for rust, leaf spots, and purple eyespot, especially during cool, moist weather. Promote airflow and avoid unnecessary leaf wetness or dense, overfertilized growth. Remove or properly manage infected residue when disease pressure is persistent. Use resistant cultivars and locally labeled treatments when identification and severity justify control.
Inspect stands for armyworms, grasshoppers, cutworms, and mites throughout active growth. Scout near dawn, dusk, or on cloudy days when armyworms are easier to find. Curled leaf tips can indicate cereal rust mite feeding. Keep field borders and grassy weeds managed to reduce pest habitat. Treat only after correct identification and when local thresholds or extension guidance support action.
