These are by far our favorite Rudbeckia flower. These provide a prolific amount of flowers that excellent for cut flower use. Once cut, these flowers will stay fresh and look great for weeks! The long narrow petals of the Chim Chiminee Rudbeckia give off beautiful fall shades of bronze, gold, red and burnt orange. This variety is perfect for any garden or vase as it is an outstanding cut flower!

Before Planting

Select full sun and ordinary, well-drained soil for black-eyed Susan. Remove perennial weeds, avoid rich manure, and cold-stratify seed when required by the species or seed source.

Planting

Surface-sow black-eyed Susan indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost. Many perennial strains germinate more uniformly after about 4 weeks of cold-moist stratification; annual Rudbeckia may not require it. Maintain 65–70°F with light, harden seedlings, and transplant 12–18 inches apart. Fall sowing provides natural chilling.

Watering

Water seedlings regularly during establishment. Mature plants tolerate moderate drought, but a deep soaking during prolonged dry weather extends flowering; let crowns drain and keep foliage dry overnight.

Fertilizer

Top-dress lightly with compost in spring. Fertilizer is unnecessary in most beds, and excess nitrogen leads to tall, floppy stems with fewer flowers.

Harvesting

Cut black-eyed Susans when ray petals are fully expanded but the dark center remains tight and pollen has not begun shedding heavily. Harvest sturdy stems early in the day and place them into water. Leave selected seed heads standing for birds or collect them after they dry.

Tips

Leave some late seed heads for finches while removing others to limit volunteers. Divide perennial clumps when crowded, and stake only unusually tall plants or those grown in partial shade.

Pests & Diseases

Septoria leaf spot, powdery mildew, rust, Botrytis blight, and Verticillium wilt can affect black-eyed Susan. Watch for dark spotted leaves, white coating, orange pustules, gray mold, or progressive wilting. Space plants generously, water at soil level, remove infected leaves and fall debris, rotate beds, and discard plants with persistent vascular wilt.

Lace bugs cause pale stippling and dark specks beneath black-eyed Susan leaves; aphids, Japanese beetles, and leafhoppers also feed on plants. Check leaf undersides first. Remove plants with aster-yellows distortion, handpick beetles, and preserve predators that help suppress lace bugs and aphids.
