Planting

Plant dormant blackberry stock in early spring, several weeks before the last expected frost. Spread bare roots through a broad hole or loosen container roots, setting the crown at the same depth it grew in the nursery. Space erect plants about 3–4 feet apart and trailing types roughly 6–8 feet apart, then water and cut back damaged cane tissue.

Watering

During establishment, water often enough that the root zone never becomes powder-dry. Fruiting plants need their most dependable supply from bloom through harvest. Drip lines or soaker hoses keep berries and leaves drier than overhead sprinklers.

Fertilizer

Japanese beetles, spotted-wing drosophila, cane borers, aphids, mites, birds, and raspberry crown borers can reduce a crop. Remove spent floricanes promptly, eliminate nearby neglected brambles, harvest ripe fruit frequently, and net plants before bird feeding becomes established.
