Before Planting

Tulips need cool winter conditions, spring sunlight, and drainage through dormancy. Prepare an entire bed to the planting depth, not narrow holes that collect water. Select heavy, firm bulbs and store them cool and dry until autumn temperatures fall.

Planting

Plant in fall after the soil cools but before it freezes. Position bulbs nose upward and basal plate downward, generally 6–8 inches deep and 4–6 inches apart. Group them for visual impact, cover evenly, water once, and protect the surface where rodents dig.

Watering

Roots form before winter, so water after planting and during an unusually dry autumn. Spring irrigation is useful while foliage grows and buds expand. Once leaves yellow, drier summer soil helps prevent bulb decay.

Fertilizer

Where soil is fertile, tulips need little more than compost. Apply balanced bulb fertilizer only when testing or weak growth indicates a need, placing it through the surrounding soil rather than directly against bulbs.

Harvesting

Cut flowers after buds color but before they open fully, leaving as much foliage as possible. Gardeners treating hybrid tulips as annuals may lift bulbs after bloom; perennialized types should retain their leaves until dormancy.

Tips

Remove spent blooms to stop seed formation, but let leaves yellow naturally. Mark the bed before foliage disappears. For dependable repeat bloom, favor perennializing types and divide crowded clumps only after dormancy.

Pests & Diseases

Tulip fire, Fusarium basal rot, Botrytis, and bulb rots persist in planting stock and soil. Inspect bulbs carefully and discard those that are soft, moldy, or spotted. Plant in well-drained ground, remove fire-blighted plants before spores spread, and never store diseased bulbs with healthy ones.

Aphids, slugs, bulb mites, squirrels, voles, tulip fire, and basal rot may damage tulips. Use sound bulbs, rotate or discard diseased stock, preserve drainage, and anchor mesh over newly planted beds if rodents are persistent.
