Before Planting

Prepare for Kalanchoe by selecting a warm location with bright, indirect light and protection from cold drafts and harsh midday sun. Use a clean, well-drained potting mix suited to kalanchoe and a container with unobstructed drainage holes. Sanitize containers, inspect planting material for pests or rot, and pre-moisten the mix before planting.

Planting

Start kalanchoe indoors in a clean, free-draining medium, generally maintaining 70–80°F unless the species prefers cooler conditions. Keep the medium evenly moist but never saturated, and expect slow or irregular germination from woody or tropical seed. Provide bright filtered light after emergence. Pot seedlings individually once sturdy, disturbing the roots as little as possible.

Watering

Water kalanchoe thoroughly, then allow the growing medium to dry substantially before watering again. Reduce irrigation during dormancy and never leave the roots standing in water.

Fertilizer

Feed kalanchoe sparingly during active growth with diluted low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer. One or two applications are usually sufficient; do not fertilize during dormancy or stress.

Tips

Keep kalanchoe slightly snug in a pot with an open drainage hole. Increase watering only during active growth, and acclimate plants gradually when moving them into stronger sun.

Pests & Diseases

Kalanchoe is prone to powdery mildew, Botrytis, bacterial soft rot, and Pythium root rot. Soft translucent stems or leaves spread decay quickly; isolate and discard affected tissue. Keep water out of the crown, allow the mix to dry appropriately, and propagate only firm, spotless leaves with clean tools.

Check kalanchoe leaf joints for mealybugs, scale, and spider mites; root mealybugs may hide below the soil line. Isolate infested plants, remove visible pests, and avoid chronically moist mix that attracts fungus gnats.
